How Do I Migrate GoDaddy Email to Microsoft 365?
First identify your current email service
“GoDaddy email” can mean different products: GoDaddy-managed Microsoft 365, an older hosted mailbox, or another email service purchased through GoDaddy. The correct migration method depends on the current provider, mailbox size, administrative access, and destination tenant. Moving from GoDaddy-managed Microsoft 365 to directly managed Microsoft 365 can involve tenant transition or defederation rather than a conventional mailbox copy.
Step 1: Inventory mailboxes and dependencies
List every mailbox, alias, shared mailbox, distribution group, forwarding rule, device, and third-party application that sends email. Record mailbox sizes, user permissions, current licenses, and any compliance or retention requirements. Identify who controls the domain and DNS records.
Step 2: Choose the destination and licenses
Determine whether you are moving to a new Microsoft 365 tenant or changing how an existing tenant is managed. Choose licenses that match mailbox capacity and desktop-app requirements. Avoid buying duplicate subscriptions until the transition plan is clear.
Step 3: Protect the data
Back up or export important mailbox data where appropriate, and confirm recovery options. Email migrations may not automatically move local Outlook archives, signatures, autocomplete entries, rules, calendars, contacts, or shared mailbox permissions. Create a checklist for these items.
Step 4: Plan the cutover
Verify the domain in the destination environment if required. Prepare MX, Autodiscover, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC settings according to the actual mail architecture. Reduce DNS TTL ahead of the cutover where appropriate, and schedule a low-traffic window. Do not change MX records before the destination is ready to receive mail.
Step 5: Migrate and test
Use a migration method supported by the source and destination environments. Test sending and receiving internally and externally, mobile devices, Outlook, shared mailboxes, forwarding, and application-generated messages. Verify mailbox contents and calendar/contact availability before retiring the old service.
Common problems to avoid
Frequent issues include missing DNS access, unlicensed accounts, forgotten aliases, failed authentication, incomplete mailbox copies, duplicate Outlook profiles, and incorrect SPF records that hurt deliverability. Multi-factor authentication and account ownership should be reviewed during the project.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Will I lose email during migration? Careful planning reduces risk, but delivery delays and configuration issues are possible.
Q: Can I keep my business email address? Usually yes, provided you control the domain and configure the destination correctly.
Q: How long does it take? It depends on the number and size of mailboxes, source platform, access, and migration method.
